    The RD-54 paratrooper's backpack.
RD-54 (Rus. paratrooper's backpack of the 1954 model) is a backpack adopted by the Soviet Airborne Forces, designed to accommodate and transport items of combat equipment of paratroopers both during parachute drop, and in marching and combat conditions.
According to some Russian experts, the RD-54 backpack belongs rather to the class of simplified unloading systems with a base in the form of a combat backpack.
    Construction
The RD-54 backpack is made of avizent and includes a shoulder pack, shoulder straps to it, a cover for an infantry shoulder blade, bags for two hand grenades and bags for two automatic magazines. The satchel part of the backpack is shaped like a box with a lid at the top and three flaps on the sides and in front. Large pockets are provided on the sides of the satchel. Inside the side pockets there are small pockets. At the bottom of the satchel and on its side walls are sewn ribbons-ties for fixing the roll of a hiking greatcoat or a raincoat-tent. To preserve the shape of the backpack, a wire frame is sewn into the inner side of its front wall. The satchel cover and its flaps are fastened with the help of cleavers.
The shoulder straps are made of cotton braid, for the convenience of the user they have a chest jumper, cotton pads, several buckles for adjusting the tension and two half-rings for the carabiners of the corner straps. On the right shoulder strap there is a pocket for the handle of a small infantry shovel.
The bag for hand grenades can be attached to both the waist belt and the left shoulder strap. It is made of avizent with a lining of waterproof cotton fabric; it can also accommodate cartridges in packs. Inside the bag there are four additional cells. The bag lid is fastened with two buttons.
The bag for automatic magazines is made of avizent, it has a buckle for attaching to the right shoulder strap with the ability to move and remove. To fasten the bag, there are two klevants.
The main design feature of the RD-54, which distinguishes it from other backpacks that were made for the Armed Forces of the USSR, is the ability to carry military personnel when making a parachute jump. This is facilitated by the relatively small size of the backpack and the design of the shoulder straps. When fitting the backpack to the jump, maximize the length of the shoulder straps, so that when it is put on, the backpack is at the level of the buttocks. The main parachute of the system, which is put on after the RD-54, occupies a place on the back above the satchel. After landing, the paratrooper is released from the straps of the parachute suspension system, after which he shortens the length of the shoulder straps to his height and brings him to the marching position (backpack on the shoulder blades).
