    Description

This design depicts the coin of Herod I (the Great) which circulated from 38 to 7 BCE.
King Herod’s coins carried no mark of denomination, though historians designate this round as 8 prutot (plural of prutah).
For unknown reasons, the weight of this coin was largely irregular and ranged widely from 6-10grams. The surrounding Greek inscription, BAΣIΛEΩΣ HPΩΔOY, quite literally means “
    of King Herod
    ”.
