Most Ancient tuna coins were minted and circulated during the III and II centuries B.C.E. According to the available information, the large distribution of bronze and silver tuna coins in the western side of the Mediterranean Sea and in the adjacent part of the Atlantic Ocean confirms the very high economic importance of the bluefin tuna fishery trade in these areas during the Phoenician and Roman times.
