Description
The Vegvisir, (also known as the runic compass), isa symbol of protection and guidance
believed to be used as a compass by Vikings. The word vegvisir means 'wayfinder' and 'sign post' in Icelandic language.
Many believed that the Vikings were all illiterate. However, the runic alphabet seems to have been widely understood as there have been thousands of runestones found all over the Scandinavian countryside. Viking runestones served as a celebration of Viking values, (such as heroism, valor, and honor) and were often discovered to be memorials to departed men during the 10
th
and 11
th
centuries.
