    Let's play!
    Archive pictures are used to illustrate and demonstrate the features
    of this type of Greist ZigZag Attachment.
    Note: Please read all the way to the end for valuable care and packing tips which will extend the life of your beautiful vintage
    Greist attachment and it's fragile case.
    ~~~
    I have so much to show and tell you.
    Did you know Greist Manufacturing Company was founded by John M. Greist? He was an inventor and employed by Singer to design and manufacture sewing machine attachments
    FOR
    Singer?
    Greist also made attachments for other sewing machine
    manufacturers
    such as Domestic, White, National and Kenmore.
    These sewing machine manufacturers had their own special way to mount their attachments to their sewing machines (for example: the Kenmore below is an example of a side attaching HIGH shank mount).
    None of the attachments above fit a vintage Singer side attaching low shank straight stitch sewing machine. For the new Singer vintage enthusiast, Greist can be discouraging and confusing. It doesn't have to be.
    ~~~
    This mount (pictured below) is what is called a side attaching low shank and fits common vintage straight stitch Singer sewing machines manufactured before the slant shank Singer sewing machines (such as the Singer 301).
    ~~~
    Don't be surprised by the similarity between
    Singer's ZigZag Attachment 160620 and Greist's ZigZag Attachment. They are both beautifully designed and sturdy cast metal vintage sewing machine tools made by the same manufacturing company.
    There
    are 2 differences
    between the Greist Zigzagger and the Singer ZigZagger which I will discuss further on.
    The foot of your Greist ZigZagger has a blue metal cording spring guide built into the foot (first picture below). And an optional adjustable edge guide (second picture below) which attaches to the foot of your Greist ZigZag Attachment using the dinky screw.
    The zigzag stitch, the cording guide and the adjustable edge guide provide a rich and imaginative world of creative sewing on a vintage straight stitch Singer Sewing Machine.
    This was fun!
    ~~~~~~~
    Adjust the stitch width here.
    Loosen the screw to release the stitch width slide.
    Tighten the screw to set the stitch width.
    1 is narrow and 4 is wide.
    I love playing with the adjustable edge guide!
    Setting the guide by loosening the dinky screw and moving the guide to the left or right of the needle determines where the stitches fall. This is important if you want the stitch to be deeper into the fabric or close to the edge of the fabric, trim or lace you are sewing.
    The edge guide placed all the way to the right (red arrow).
    Or all the way to the left (blue arrow).
    Accurate placement of the edge guide feeds the fabric to exactly where you want the needle to stitch.
    ~~~
    Joining lace invisibly.
    ~~~
    And why not little zigzag pintucks?
    ~~~
    This was easy and inspiring!
    Lacey lingerie!
    Using the zigzag stitch alone to add floral lace to the hem of lingerie.
    Follow the outer edge of the lace using a matching thread.
    Carefully cut the hem close to the stitching (red arrow).
    Turn your work to the right side and voila!
    A romantic lace hem!
    There you have it!
    I hope you will add this delightful beautifully engineered vintage Greist ZigZag Attachment with Adjustable Edge Guide to your collection of creative sewing  tools!
    And just so you know...
    The 2 differences between Singer's ZigZag Attachment
    and Greist's ZigZag Attachment.
    1.
    The black housing on the Singer attachment is metal. The black housing on the Greist attachment is a very sturdy plastic (I have never seen one that is cracked).
    2.
    The Singer attachment has a pawl near the ratchet wheel which  when flipped back converts the Singer ZigZag attachment to straight stitching. You do not need to remove the Singer ZigZag Attachment from the sewing machine.
    The Greist ZigZag Attachment does not have this feature. To switch to straight stitching, the Greist Attachment must be taken off the presser bar and replaced with the standard presser foot.
    OK... 3.
    The Singer ZigZag Attachment does not come with the snazzy plastic case!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Important Care and Storage Tips!
    This is the most vulnerable part of the plastic case. The little hinge (blue arrow).
    Let me show you how to place your attachment and the adjustable edge guide to keep the plastic case and hinges safe.
    ~~~
    The adjustable edge guide goes in first.
    Place the adjustable edge guide at the back of the case in it's special slot with the little screw at the top left. The screw head should be facing the back of the case (green arrow).
    The guide should EASILY slide down all the way into the slot. If the adjustable edge guide is not seated properly, closing the clear lid will break the plastic hinges and crack the lid.
    Do not try to store your Greist ZigZag Attachment without
    adjusting the stitch width slide to narrow. The base will be too long to fit correctly (green X's below).
    When the stitch width slide is moved to narrow, the attachment foot, the width adjusting screw and the adjustable edge guide will sit into the case neatly. The clear plastic case lid will close safely.
    Care and storage tips are included.
